The work

Flight test engineers design the test points, brief the crew, sit in the aircraft or the telemetry room, and expand the envelope one careful step at a time. The discipline exists because the alternative is finding the edge by accident.

How people get in

• Engineering degree

  Aerospace or mechanical, then a flight test organisation.

• Military

  A well-worn route, particularly for test pilot school.

How it unfolds

1. DegreeAerospace engineering, then several years of design or analysis first.
2. Years 3-6Ground test and telemetry, learning the aircraft and the instrumentation.
3. Years 7+Airborne: flying the test points with the crew, live, and calling knock-it-off.
4. LaterTest programme lead, or a test pilot school if you fly.

Is there a job in it

The hard parts

Flight test is deliberate exposure to the edges of what an aircraft has been proven to do, and the discipline exists because people died establishing it. The hours are long, the deployments are real, and the job is to be extremely calm while being extremely careful.
