Orbit is not a height, it is a speed, and everything difficult about spaceflight follows from how expensive that speed is.
Space is the field where intuition is least useful and mathematics is most. Orbits behave nothing like driving. Thermal control is harder without air. Communication has a light-time delay you cannot argue with. And once a spacecraft has launched, everything you do to it, you do from a console on the ground.

What is actually going on
Gravity at the station’s altitude is close to 90% of what it is at sea level. They float because they are falling, continuously, and missing the Earth, which is what an orbit is.
