The work

Rotary flying is a different licence and a genuinely different skill: a helicopter is unstable by design and hand-flying one is a continuous task. The work is emergency medical services, search and rescue, police, offshore transfer, survey and lift, jobs defined by being able to land where nothing else can.

A typical day

• 01Fly on demand rather than to a timetable
• 02Assess a landing site from the air, with nobody to ask
• 03Work closely with paramedics, crews or ground teams
• 04Manage weather margins that are much tighter than an airliner’s

How people get in

• Civil training

  Expensive per hour, and the first job usually comes through instructing or tour flying.

• Military

  Funded training and a great deal of experience, with a service commitment attached.

How it unfolds

1. Year 1Licence, then instructing or tour flying, because the first job is the hard one to get.
2. Years 2-5Utility, survey or offshore work. Turbine hours are the currency.
3. Years 6+Emergency medical services, police or search and rescue, which almost all require experience first.
4. LaterTraining captain, or a management role in an operator that still lets you fly.

Is there a job in it

The hard parts

Rotary training costs more per hour than fixed wing and the first job pays less. The work that most people want (air ambulance, rescue) is the work that requires the most hours, so there are several years in between. The flying is hands-on in a way that does not let you relax.
