The work

Structures work is the discipline of load paths and margins. You take a set of load cases, work out what the structure does under each one, and either prove it survives or change it until it does, usually while someone is asking you to remove mass.

A typical day

• 03Sit in design reviews and say no with a reason

How people get in

• Engineering degree

  The standard route, and the one most employers list.

• Degree apprenticeship

  Increasingly common: paid work from day one with the degree alongside it.

How it unfolds

1. DegreeMechanical, aerospace or civil, with real depth in statics and materials.
2. Years 1-3Hand calculations and finite element work, checked by somebody more senior.
3. Years 4-8Owning a load path end to end, and signing the stress report.
4. LaterStress lead or chief structures engineer.

The hard parts

The work is meticulous, repetitive in places, and unforgiving of small errors, because the small error is the one that gets through review. Much of it is justifying a design that already exists rather than creating one.
